Boy Hit Outside Earl LeGette Elementary School
SAFETY INCIDENT UPDATE!
I'm extremely saddened to report that after school today, a 6th grade student was riding his bike across the crosswalk along Kenneth Avenue, heading north. A vehicle was turning left and hit the student.
Sac Metro Fire and CHP responded, along with school personnel, to the scene. The student sustained a small abrasion on the right knee, with no other viewable evidence of injury. Mom showed up and determined he didn't need to be transported. He was walking fine. It could have been much worse! Thankfully, it wasn't.
Incidents like this scare the heck out of me! Our students are at risk every day using crosswalks without crossing guards. Our staff is legally not able to act as crossing guards. We use to have a crossing guard at the corner of Kenneth and Sunset. The County of Scramento no longer saw a need. I say the need still exists more than ever!
This accident is a good reminder to all drivers to ensure students using crosswalks make eye contact with you as a driver. AND, it's an excellent teaching point for all students to use proper safety measures when using a crosswalk: get off a bike (if on one), look both ways, and ensure the drivers are looking at you.
Thank you for driving safe while around schools!
